Captain Doug
The Tale of Captain Doug
Captain doug isn’t your average skipper. With saltwater running through his veins, he’s been navigating boats since he was a wee lad on Lake Ontario. His dad, a member of a race team, introduced him to the joys of sailing, and the rest, as they say, is history. While the adults raced, young doug and his friends would sail around in dinghies, soaking up the sights, smells, and sounds of the lake.
When doug moved to the San Francisco Bay area in 1987, his father suggested he take up sailing again. After years of racing with a local couple, doug found himself disenchanted with the yacht club scene. He switched gears to whitewater rafting, spending a decade with an organization that offered outdoor adventures for people with disabilities. But the call of the sea was too strong, and doug eventually returned to sailing. This time, he embraced a different kind of sailing—adventure sailing, or cruising, as it’s known. This passion for adventure led him to charter sailing, where he could share his love for the sea with others.
The Origin of Taihoa
Taihoa is a piece of living history. Built in the 1940s in New Zealand from unique tropical hardwoods, Taihoa is a testament to the craftsmanship of a bygone era. Captain doug considers himself not just the owner, but the steward of this magnificent vessel. He’s dedicated to preserving her for future generations, ensuring she remains in excellent shape—if not better—than when she first came into his care.
Doug’s commitment to Taihoa is evident in every aspect of his life. He lives aboard the boat, performing all maintenance, installations, and repairs himself. With a mobile woodworking shop at his disposal, he ensures Taihoa is always shipshape. This level of dedication sets doug apart from other charter captains, many of whom rely on external vendors for upkeep.
The Heart of the Business
At its core, doug’s charter business is about more than just sailing. It’s about creating a living, breathing museum on the water. doug shares Taihoa’s storied past with his guests, enriching their journey with tales of yesteryear. This dedication to history and heritage is a hallmark of his charters, distinguishing them from the plastic boats that populate the Bay.
Doug’s ability to balance safety and enjoyment ensures every trip is a memorable voyage. His extensive experience as an outdoor leader shines through, making his charters both exhilarating and secure. Whether you’re a history buff or just looking for a fun day on the water, a sail with Captain doug promises to be an unforgettable experience.
