Our Captain
Redefine Sausalito Sailing Experience with Captain Doug Workmaster and Taihoa
Meet Captain doug Workmaster, the yachtsman steering Taihoa, who has a knack for transforming the whole experience of Sausalito sailing. doug’s seafaring saga began back on Lake Ontario, where he first caught the sailing bug while his dad chased racing trophies. “Those were the days,” he chuckles, recalling how they’d zip around in dinghies as kids while the grown-ups duked it out on the big boats. Fast-forward to ’87, and Doug finds himself on the windswept shores of San Francisco Bay, swapping lake breezes for Pacific swells. “Figured I’d give the Bay a shot,” he grins, “since it’s practically in my front yard.” As a USCG captain with decades of know-how, doug knows better than to ever turn your back on San Francisco Bay.
From hardcore yacht racing to what he calls “adventure sailing,” doug’s journey has been a tidal wave of excitement. Ultimately, he ditched the macho yacht club vibe for a life of coastal cruises and epic ocean crossings.
Off-duty, doug’s a history buff (thanks to his old man), keen on keeping Taihoa’s legacy alive. “It’s like running a floating museum,” he grins, “only with fewer dusty artifacts and more wind in your hair.” So, if you’re up for a nautical escapade with a side of sea tales, a few cheeky sea shanties, and maybe a bad boat joke or two, Captain doug and Taihoa await. Because life’s too short to stay anchored—you gotta sail with the wind, ride the waves, and maybe even beat an America’s Cup boat at their own game (even if it’s just a story).

Want To Enjoy Boat Rides To Sausalito? Introducing The World To The Queen Of Sailboats- Taihoa
Here are some interesting facts about our beloved vessel:
- Taihoa is a classic, wooden vessel built in the 1940s down in New Zealand. The original owner built her by hand in his backyard, and we have the photos to prove it!
- Made from unique tropical hardwoods that are no longer readily available, she is truly one of a kind. This makes her not only a beautiful and unique vessel but also a piece of maritime history that is carefully preserved.
- All maintenance, installations, and repairs are personally handled, ensuring that the boat is kept in excellent, if not better, condition for future generations.
- The captain lives aboard Taihoa full-time, showing a total commitment to the maritime lifestyle. This dedication goes beyond that of a typical charter boat captain, offering guests a unique and highly personalized sailing adventure.
When you step onto Taihoa, you’re not just booking a boat ride; you’re entering a world of tradition, craftsmanship, and adventure. You’ll feel the difference in the way she moves through the water, hear the stories in her timbers, and see the passion in every aspect of your journey. Once we hit the water, you’ll see why our boat rides to Sausalito are so special. Safety is paramount, but that doesn’t mean we skimp on the fun.
